Four Workshops devoted to Sculpting

Ελληνικά

Happy and Creative New Year!

Let’s start the New Year with SCULPTING – sculpting faces, sculpting animals, sculpting the human body and sculpting reliefs. Each subject for itself is vast in possibilities and styles.

The process of building a sculpture has its very own way. It’s often full of changes along the run and not seldom with surprises, you are never really sure about the outcome. I think most of the magic lies exactly in there. As Christian Morgenstern’s quote says:

Jede Schöpfung ist ein Wagnis. – Every creation is a risk.

The motivating part is, that you really don’t need any experience or special abilities to be able to sculpt with clay.

Here is the program:

1. Sculpting Faces

27/1/2024 Saturday,   10:00-14:00

The subject of this workshop will be the human face. All levels are welcome. It is amazing how a lump of clay turns step by step into something almost alive….and it doesn’t matter how realistic nose, mouth, eyes are formed. They get their own life and expression anyway and turn into something very personal and unique.

We will use the local red clay and leave the fired pieces in terracotta colour.

Here you can see pieces from past Modelling Faces Workshops.

2. Sculpting a Relief Picture

28/1/2024 Sunday, 10:00-17:00 with a break for lunch which I will provide.

10/2/2024 Saturday, 10:00-13:00 painting and finishing the relief.

In this workshop we transform an idea or an image that we like into a three-dimensional picture. It could be a portrait, a landscape, a plant or animal, a mandala or just anything that you can imagine. There are no limits! After the pieces are fired we will meet again and paint them with acrylics.
Here you can find pictures of some examples.

3. Sculpting Animals

4/2/2024 Sunday, 10:00-17:00 with a break for lunch which I will provide.

This workshop is devoted to sculpting animals – any kind of animals existing on earth, in dreamland or in our fantasy. This is quite an open field from very realistic to completely abstract.
My intention is to help everyone find an idea, a pose and a way to sculpt an animal figure that suits his/her abilities and tastes and to support putting it into practice.

The finished pieces will be dried and fired and will get that typical terracotta colour of the fired clay.

4. Sculpting the Human Body

11/2/2024 Sunday, 10:00-17:00 with a break for lunch which I will provide.

This workshop is devoted to sculpting the human body. After a short study of proportions of the human body and some examples of different kinds of sculptures we shape and model our own figure. This is quite an open field from very realistic to completely abstract.
My intention is to help everyone find an idea, a pose and a way to sculpt a figure that suits his/her abilities and tastes and to support putting it into practice.

The finished sculptures will be dried and fired and will get that typical terracotta colour of the fired clay.

Each workshop is self-contained but of course you can attend more than one.

For all workshops:

  • All the necessary materials (clay, acrylic paints etc) as well as the firing and lunch are provided.
  • No previous knowledge in pottery is necessary.
  • As soon as your objects are ready I will contact you so you can come and pick them up from my atelier.
  • For any questions or registration call me at 697 422 11 51 or email me at schnyder.barbara@gmail.com.

Ceramic Workshops in November 2023

Ελληνικά

It’s time for Touching Clay! This November there are four different subjects to be explored:

  1. Plant Pots with Stamps and Imprints
  2. Colourful Jars with Lids
  3. Clay Meditation & Creating a Treasure Box
  4. Sculpting the Human Body

Each workshop is self-contained and you can attend one or two or all of them. Make sure that if there are two dates for one subject you are able to participate on both days in order to finish your pieces of pottery.

1. Beautiful decorated plant pots…

…for your garden, terrace and indoor spaces.

Before we put the parts (bottom, sides, feet etc.) together we make decorative imprints with stamps or whatever can be used as stamps such as flowers, leaves, textiles, buttons, pen lids, just anything you can think of.

These pots will stay in the terracotta colour of the fired clay and for a more contrasty effect I will treat them after the first firing either with a white or a dark colour (as you prefer) before firing them the second time with transparent glaze on the inside if you wish.

5/11/2023 Sunday, 10:00-17:00 with a break for lunch which I will provide.

Here you find a variety of plant pots that we made in past workshops.

2. Colourful Jars with Lids

For organizing small things with a personal touch. A jar to store your jewellery, a jar to put cookies, chocolates or to present nuts or olives on a table.

There are many possibilities of different shapes and colours to design your own unique jar. I will show and explain step by step an easy way for beginners and also more advanced ways. On the first day we build and form the jars and the lids and on the following class we give our pieces a colourful coating with engobes which have to be put on before the first firing. After the firing I will glaze them with shiny or matt transparent glaze, whatever you decide for each of your pieces, and then fire them a second time.

11/11/2023 Saturday,   10:00-17:00 with a break for lunch which I will provide.
18/11/2023 Saturday, 10:00-13:00 painting our pieces before they get fired and glazed.

3. Clay Meditation & Creating your unique Treasure Box

  • Clay Meditation
  • Creating your own little unique Treasure Box

Your Treasure Box will be fired and glazed with a transparent glaze inside. It will stay in the terracotta colour of the fired clay with a whitish wash.

25/11/2023 Saturday, 9:30-13:30

Ceramic Workshops in February 2023

Ελληνικά

I hope you had a nice and joyful start into the New Year and you are full of energy, motivation and inspiration!

The series of workshops last November and December were a real treat to me. They let me finish the old year with a great feeling of satisfaction and gratitude. In the six independent workshops we worked with clay in many different ways –  from simply playing and exploring the material, constructing and painting colourful jars with lids, sculpting the human body, scratching designs into white layers of engobe and modelling faces to finding the connection to our inner world through clay meditation. All together a vast spectrum of doing pottery. I tried to catch some moments with the camera. You can find the pictures in the gallery.

I’m very happy to announce the next series of workshops which will take place in February. There will be four self-contained workshops with the following subjects:

  1. Modelling Faces
  2. Relief
  3. Lamps and Fragrance Oil Burners
  4. Sculpting the Human Body

Workshop 1: Modelling Faces

4/2/2023 Sunday,   10:00-14:00

The subject of this workshop will be the human face. All levels are welcome. It is amazing how a lump of clay turns step by step into something almost alive….and it doesn’t matter how realistic nose, mouth, eyes are formed. They get their own life and expression anyway and turn into something very personal and unique.

We will use the local red clay and leave the fired pieces in terracotta colour.

Here you can see pieces from past Modelling Faces Workshops.

Workshop 2: Building a Relief Picture

5/2/2023 Sunday, 10:00-17:00 with a break for lunch which I will provide.

26/2/2023 Sunday, 10:00-13:00 painting and finishing the relief.

Workshop 3: Lamps and Fragrance Oil Burners

12/2/2023 Sunday, 10:00-17:00 with a break for lunch which I will provide.
18/2/2023 Saturday, 10:00-13:00 painting our pieces before they get fired and glazed.

For creating a nice and warm atmosphere with a special candle lighting and filling the room with beautiful fragrances.

There are different shapes and types of fragrance and other lamps that we will design and build by using templates and following step by step demonstrations. An entire Sunday will give us enough time for more than one project. On the following Saturday we give our pieces a colourful coating with engobes which have to be put on before the first firing. After the firing I will glaze them with shiny or matt transparent glaze, whatever you decided for each of your pieces, and then fire them a second time.

Workshop 4: Sculpting the Human Body

19/2/2023 Sunday, 10:00-17:00 with a break for lunch which I will provide.

This workshop is devoted to sculpting. After a short study of proportions of the human body and some examples of different kinds of sculptures we shape and model our own figure. This is quite an open field from very realistic to completely abstract.

Happy New Year!

Ελληνικά

Very soon we enter the new year. Looking back at the old one, I’m filled with so much gratitude. Finding this little ruined house in Stylos was a big gift to me and renovating and putting it up as my new atelier a whole spring project. It kept me busy for quite a while and I put it in operation by making a 100 Mosquito Coil Holders.

I also invited people to an Open Door Day to celebrate my new place. I was overwhelmed by all the kindness and good wishes I received! Thank you so much.

After a busy season as a walking guide, the first ceramic workshops finally took place in November and December. The last workshops I held were two years before, and I almost forgot how much joy they bring. They made my atelier even more alive, and it was wonderful to see all these different new creations coming into life. Once again I realized what a satisfying activity making pottery is. Some participants were even touching clay for their first time. I find this always something very special. In the gallery you can see pictures of the Workshops and the Autumn Pottery Class.

In between the ceramic workshops I had time for my latest little project: Lamps which shine bright and colourful. More about them you can find in the Shop section.

And what will the new year bring?

I’m certain 2022 offers us opportunities to expand our creativity.
I’m full of ideas and projects that I would love to share with you. A new program is on the way. I will share it as soon as the dates are set.

Meanwhile, I wish you a wonderful jump into 2022. Shall it bring you the most amazing surprises, breakthroughs, turns and rides. And always light and love.

Barbara
